Carlos Cesar Alves was born April 11, 1964, in Monte Castelo, Brazil. Early in his childhood, Alves discovered a passion for creative endeavors by working with his hands and imagination. By age 11, he began earning a living by weaving colored weft threads for tapestries and rugs. During adolescence and early adulthood, he honed his innate artistic skills by creating ceramic sculpture. And later, as a young man working in business and industry, he indulged his creative expression by making extraordinary topiaries of rare and unusual materials. Today, Alves is a contemporary painter who pushes his creative limits perceptually and technically; an experimental innovator.

Perhaps the biggest chance Alves has taken was a journey into the art world itself. A self-taught artist, it was his intense drive and desire to paint that propelled him to leave behind a corporate career – 20 years in management as Financial Director for GM Locomotive, Brazil and later as a Project Manager for Citibank, USA – to fully embrace life, and new opportunities for creative expression as a working artist.

2006 was a pivotal year for Alves. He began painting full-time and experimenting with resin as the primary medium for his work. The result is a glossy, ceramic look which has become his recognizable signature.

Although abstract in nature, the content of his vibrant and dramatic paintings offers the viewer hints about the artist himself. His whimsical characters echo his boyhood love for cartoon characters. The complex forms in his abstract works mirror a lifelong pursuit of understanding through self-discovery. This stylized stream of consciousness on canvas is evidenced in much of his work and is a joyous representation of the artistic freedom Alves gained when he committed his creative energies to a career as a professional artist. His popular “Friends” series conveys a need for order and perfection, and clearly harkens back to his days weaving tapestries and rugs as a young boy.

Alves publicly arrived on the art scene during the summer of 2006 when he was invited to show at the Leiter Gallery in Miami’s Design District. The Art of Living was an unprecedented exhibition featuring sculptures and paintings from artists such as L.Oriano Galloni, John LaHuis, Sinuhe Vega, Rafael Arango, David Stuart, and Anna Carballosa among others. His work gained significant notoriety during the show and consequently, he was invited back to participate in the exhibition Satisfactions.

In June of 2007, Alves participated in United and Proud, an exhibition showcasing the original works of over 50 artists at the Gallery Six Broward County Main Library. His artwork "Seasons" was recognized with the Best Mixed Media award by judges Steven Glassman and Tin Ly of the Broward County Cultural Division. This was a remarkable moment for an artist who is known for vibrant, colorful works, but whom few know is actually colorblind.

On December 1, 2007, Alves had his first solo exhibition at the Avenue Lofts Gallery in Fort Lauderdale where he displayed 20 of his paintings. He then participated in the 2007 Art Basel week Special Event Dolce IV: Look and Life at the Castello on Sunset Isle II, Miami Beach. At Art Basel 2008, he exhibited a range of his work at the Wynwood Fine Arts Gallery in the Wynwood Design District.

Carlos Cesar Alves’ work is a mixed media adventure which finds expression through the heart and creative mind of an experimental innovator. He explores and shares his perceptions about the mysteries of life, the nature of human beings and our interaction with the world around us. He draws from the people he meets, the architecture he admires, the world he observes.

By answering his inner need for self-expression and ultimate calling to art, Alves has had the opportunity to fulfill his soulful belief of “creating a chain of good in the world.” Notably, he donates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of his paintings to local and national charities. He has also created several original pieces for charitable causes including the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center for children living with HIV/AIDS.

His growing body of eclectic artwork is to be applauded as a remarkable example of the power of self-discovery and the reward for taking risks, both creatively and professionally.

My art embodies my representation of a deeper message using shapes, forms and polished texture to communicate a story. For me, the canvas serves as both mask and magnifier. It allows me to either hide inside my psyche, or reveal important elements through brushstrokes and layers of paint.

My work is the reflection of my inner world; what I have seen, what I believe and where I hope to go. Ultimately, I desire my paintings to speak to the universal dichotomies in our human nature; the co-existing opposites that energetically vacillate between our moments of creation and demise.

I see my art as an imaginative exploration of our human emotions. So when I paint, I feel myself separate from the limitations of everyday reality. Restrictions, boundaries and rules disappear as the colors and shapes form images through the autonomous movement of my hands. This synergy formed by the release of my creative impulse and merged with my artistic application of new materials and textures, results in work that I hope calls to be touched and examined.

The beauty for me of working in Mixed Media is that I get to play with unique materials. Like an apprentice studying their craft, I enjoy learning the remarkable attributes of each material and then using them to produce artistic designs which reveal my reality, my fantasy and of course my inner smile.

I am humbled and proud to be an artist. My gratitude for all that has been given me is my motivation to pass on good in this world and the reason why I demand the highest level of perfection from myself. My hope, my wish, my dream is for people to simply enjoy my art and share that joy with the people in their lives.
