Mark Bradford, Urs Fischer, Julie Mehretu, Sterling Ruby, Rudolf Stingel at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) at Grand Ave. April 29th, 2012 - August 20th, 2012

The second my shoes hit the white wall-to-wall carpeting that blanketed the galleries, I was struck by how radically this simple addition—actually, as it turned out, an artwork by Rudolf Stingel—shifted both the acoustics and the register of the space. With the hushed voices and dampened footsteps, I felt like I’d wandered by mistake into a showroom whose wares I obviously couldn't afford. Of course, this feeling of displacement might've had something to do with the fact that I was oscillating b... [more]

Urs Fischer at Sadie Coles - New Space October 6th, 2010 - December 11th, 2010
Posted 11/6/10

Adjacent to the festive consumerist glitz of Regent Street, the Sadie Coles gallery is inaugurating a brand new space with an exhibition of Urs Fischer mirror sculptures as dazzling as any designer shop window. Fischer has littered the space with a variety of giant mirrored boxes with views (front, back, sides and top) of everyday objects screen printed onto each side in hyper-real digital detail. Giant cigarette packets, high heeled shoes and oversized chairs dwarf viewers like a Pop... [more]

Monuments represent power and are generally speaking stand-ins for national identity; in a word, they are authoritarian. Monuments-as-objects have had their sense and meaning radically changed with an array of failure and crises across the modern historical and political panorama. We are presently plagued with the decay of monuments, a de-monumentalization of symbols and historical icons often replaced by other varieties, less governmental, more icon: TV personalities, general phemera and the omni... Urs Fischer at New Museum October 21st, 2009 - February 7th, 2010
Posted 11/8/09

Urs Fischer defies description.  Zurich-born, he lives and works in a downtown Brooklyn loft, is covered in tattoos, and chooses to picture himself prone, yellow-tank-top clad, and snuggling a bug-eyed Chihuahua; he is an artist known to turn expectations on their heads.  He finds ever riper—or more rotten, as it were—ways to challenge the idea of “the exhibition,” despite decades of scholarship which have declared that endeavor either no longer relevant, no longer compelling, impossi...
