When I spoke with Shirlae Cheng-Lifshin, the curator of the exhibition, she stated that the seed for the exhibition was based on Monica Majoli's artwork. Majoli's Black Mirror (Kate) and (Jarrett) 2009 portray figures deferring to the shadows-profiling the people's grief, loss, and longing. The portraits are whispers of sensuality reminiscent of Georges de la Tour's paintings of Magdalen. Shirlae chose Los Angeles based artists who complemented Monica's perspective of desire.
