Cui Fei at Chambers Fine Art April 25th, 2013 - June 7th, 2013

I remembered my desire to meditate more often when I visited “Cui Fei: Tracing the Origin” at Chambers Fine Art. The moment I ducked into the gallery I was overcome with a sense of quietude. I muttered aloud to myself: what is the Chinese equivalent to the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi? As I scanned the twisted metal and vine that makes up much of the work of this young Chinese artist, I remembered that the origins of “Wabi” (despondence) and “Sabi” (solitude) are distinctly Chinese. Cui Fei graduated from the Zheji... [more]

Coincidental Opposites, the summer group show at Causey Contemporary, takes the condition of dualities as its curatorial platform. But don’t think the exhibition’s strength emanates from the old yin-yang philosophy. Rather like a fine meal, it’s the pairing of eclectic yet complimentary elements that gives cohesion and vitality to the show as a whole. There are eight artists in the exhibition and each has contributed fully matured work. Perhaps the most spectacular is Jordan Eagles’s... [more]

Arario Gallery’s summer group show brings together three young artists – Aakash Nihalani, Cui Fei and Minette Mangahas – whose works approach writing and language through form and abstraction. While the show’s title, Paraphrase, suggests the ways in which text can be restated or re-interpreted, Nihalani, Fei, and Mangahas' works expand the notion of paraphrase by challenging the ways in which text and language are imbued with meaning through spare and simple installations. Filling... [more]

Chinatown is a flurry of storefronts and enterprising hawkers selling imported goods out of the box, right there on the sidewalk. As a satellite of the exhibition, Present TENSE Biennial – Chinese Character-, presented by the Chinese Culture Center on Kearny Street, nine storefront windows facing the bustling streets of Chinatown contain artist installations.  The installations themselves are curious— Imin Yeh’s random household objects wrapped in patterned cloth, which quietly comments... Cui Fei at Cheryl McGinnis Gallery December 4th, 2007 - February 14th, 2008
Posted 1/20/08

If you’re feeling like Thoreau, or just looking for a crack in the decadence of New York’s contemporary art scene, then head uptown to the Cheryl McGinnis Gallery where Cui Fei’s Manuscript of Nature offers a quiet, yet deeply resonant, exploration into the language of nature. Sourcing the lexicon (tendrils, thorns, leaves, etc.) of the manuscript from the parks of New York, Fei composes a series of mixed media works, prints, and photographs, that reveal a fresh thought on the relationship of c...
