raising your voice during these uncertain times (Blog on Twitter and Artslant Blog)
Art is to many people different things. From consumable gourmet to the eye, to a provocation, underlining things as they are, reproducing what’s already there, a statement, showing the essence or pointing out the obvious.
While we all follow the news with regards to these uncertain times, not many people make statements, while people get ripped off, democratic values are eroded. Is it due to the fear of putting off potential buyers? Is this justified?
Even in the 'old Days' during oppressive Monarchies, many times Artists were allowed to say things, others wouldn't dare to mention. Throughout the art world, Painters, Poets, Composers and Writers, Performers, felt free enough, to express themselves. And they were listened to, watched and their work hung up their walls by the very people they were targetting.
Today the royals and powerful, maybe aren't wearing crowns, at least in most places, but they 'pull the strings' in the same way.
But one thing, I believe they are very well capable of what we all should be: Being able to laugh about themselves and do the same what monarchs did before them. To buy art that takes a satirical view of their own way of life. We as Artists shouldn't shy away from this.
Besides Art, I also studied IT. I was Project manager for many big multinational companies. Due to this I was in a position to choose staff and decide whom to work with. One thing I did not like, People who said 'yes' to everything I suggested. I wanted teamplayer with a mind of their own, contributors, someone who could stand up to me, if i was wrong, or missing something. In the same way we must not be afraid to raise our voices as artists. There's much more room out there then you might assume.
