The contemporary abstract acrylic paintings created by Denise Landis typically have bold, bright colors and are described as both primitive and modern. Denise frequently uses large and/or small dabs of colors in a modified pointillism style. The actual process of Pointillism can be tedious but Denise uses the nonstop repetition of movement as a form of internal chanting and meditation. “You can hear me humming the same four notes over and over while I paint. It’s un-nerving to my husband but instinctual for me.” Denise likens this process to the repetitive sounds of nature or her own heartbeats. Her finished pieces reflect colors that simply "play" on the canvas; therefore, bringing life to each piece.
Since 2000, Denise has been a full-time artist. Her ‘Landisworks Studios’ are located in two very different locales in Arizona, a state full of colorful characters and scenery. One studio is in the Phoenix Metro area and the other in the countryside of Arizona's White Mountains. The local color of each area and her travels help create her varied subject matter. While Denise's favorite works are portraits, she also paints landscapes and still-lifes and creates jewelry from rocks and minerals from around the world.
