Statement

Liu Dao is an art collective with headquarters in Shanghai's island6 Arts Center. The spirit and purpose behind all Liu Dao artworks, literary contributions, and exhibitions is collaboration. The group places emphasis on interaction in order to engage artists and art lovers in the process of creating and experiencing art focusing on collective rather than individual values, with the direct aim of benefiting young Chinese contemporary artists promotionally and creatively.

As directors and producers of the art collective, Thomas Charvériat and Zane Mellupe created an artistic unit in 2007 around a framework of eclectic, artistic and academic interests. His ideas continue to serve as a nucleus for a system which produces cutting edge, acclaimed art where the future of Asia is continuously contemplated, and the talents of new Chinese artists are elevated by working in the inspiration of a communal forum.

Since Liu Dao’s beginning, painters, sculptors, photographers, filmmakers, new media artists, software and digital imaging artists, dancers, writers, and engineers have been recruited to collaborate inside a dynamic that sees the constant emission and development of original, intriguing work, bred from distinctions among the participating artists’ fields of work and study.

An apt comparison for Liu Dao’s production process is that of the film industry. Each artwork and exhibition has a cast with credits for people of different skills. The arrangement of Liu Dao is always open to adaptation but the essence of the current art group has six Chinese artists who come from different backgrounds but all have a passion for contemporary art or experience in technology-based artwork. Four directors guide and facilitate the creative flow between participants. Two engineers manage any technical difficulties and are able to skillfully construct a myriad of pieces in different mediums. Various other roles are filled by rotating contributors such as camera operators, film editors, actors, and choreographers. The diversity of contributors configures the ideal group for spontaneous, electric, collective energy among its talents. Liu Dao occasionally features guest directors to help design installations and lead other projects, allowing an international and cross-cultural foundation for original ideas to be born from even more varied sources of input.

Liu Dao has appeared in acclaimed art festivals around the world, including Art Paris and the Hong Kong Art Fair.  After solo shows in Taipei and Beijing, as well as trips to HK Art Fair 2010 and an appearance at Louis Vuitton Cultural Space in Macau, the group of six artists are capping off their most successful year with a solo show in Bangkok. For "Electric Shanghai", curated by American Tally Beck, the artists bring figurative portraits of what many consider the most exciting and important rising city in the world.
