Interview with Liz Young

The artslant girls met up with liz young in her glendale, CA studio.  Liz is currently finishing up two shows - a solo at Alfred University in New York and The Powder Room exhibit at Track 16 in Los Angeles.  And she is completing work for a number of exhbitions coming up this summer.

Among stray kittens, vinyl pigs, horse paintings, deer targets, exquisite sewn drawings and lots of curiosities, we had tea and a chat.

What’s your earliest memory of art making?   I had a set of colored pencils that I carried everywhere. They were my prize possession. Also when I was 7 I wrote that I had green eyes, blonde hair and that when I grew up I wanted to be an artist.

Who was the first artist that affected you?
I saw lots of famous art when I was growing up but the first artist to really affect me was Vito Acconci.

What’s your best kept secret?  Well if I told you then everybody would know...I’m not falling for that one.

What do you listen to?  Recent reads?
40’s Western Swing and Big Band, ABBA, and Old time radio shows

Who or what influences you now?
Taxidermy, Field Guides to Birds, prosthetics, old orthopedic catalogs, design and flea markets

What would you change in the art scene?
Museums would be free and there would be lots of financial support for artists

Why do you get up in the morning?
I have a lot on my plate right now and I can’t do it lying down

How do you stay sane?  Go to my studio, go to the gym and eat humble pie

What do you dig? What do you don’t?  I love horses, cows and deer, potatoes, baseball, and old movies. I hate Bush, rude people and the cost of living in Los Angeles.
