The ArtSlant Prize, now in its 5th year, is given to emerging artists that exhibit great potential and commitment to their artistic practice. Previous winners include Julie Davidow, Michael Zelehoski, Chantel Foretich, Robert Minervini, Holly Murkerson, Veronica Bruce and others. As part of this program, three to four winners are selected each year to exhibit at a major art fair in the United States; for the last three years, that fair has been Aqua Art Miami.
Over the course of the year, our users submit their work to be reviewed by a panel of jurors comprised of gallerists, curators, arts professionals and artists. From each round, 8 Juried Winners are selected and from this pool of exceptional artists, the winners of the ArtSlant Prize are selected. One winner will receive a purchase award and one of their works will enter the ArtSlant Collection. You can check out all the jurors and Juried Winners from 2013 here. The ArtSlant Prize 2013 purchase award winner will be announced at the ArtSlant AfterParty on Saturday, December 7th at Aqua Art Miami.

The ArtSlant Prize Winners for 2013 are:
I’m interested in the unending role of the maker. Ideas of progress, or what it means to advance, are acted out on materials in an interchangeability between the lo-tech requirements of traditional crafts, such as brick construction or weaving, and the utilitarian expectation of making something “useful”. Mimicking industrial production through repetition and pattern creation, I have immersed myself in the process and ideology of specialized labor.
The history of connections between textiles and electronics provides inspiration alongside the cultural identification of the ephemeral patterns of a digital age. My tapestry work is created utilizing a digitally operated Jacquard loom, the contemporary version of the first binary operated machine and precursor to the first computer. The juxtaposition of textiles with technology opens an interesting conversation of reconciling the old with the new, traditions with new possibilities, as well as the relationship between textiles and language.
Inspired by my background in fashion and textile design, my current paintings are the representation of materials and patterns achieved through experimentation with indigo, using various resist dye techniques.
I would describe my work as humourous but with a slight edge to that humour that can unsettle the viewer at times. The feeling that I am exploring in my work, known as 'the uncanny', can frequently occur through strangely humorous imagery.
I am interested in how imagery interacts with the intrinsic qualities of paint, how the paint material moves and how it can be played with. The paintings are carefully planned through several stages of drawing. The quality of paint handling, although seemingly casual, is a result of repeated attempts at getting something 'right'.
My recent work investigates the need for human connection through the use of ephemera, innuendos and repetitive actions. My intention is to dissect why the desire for a specific place of belonging; mentally, physically and romantically, is so instinctive. Using the body as an instigator, I confront frustrations with futility, desires with aggression, and self-doubt with humor. My attempts at portraying an environment both physically and metaphysically aim to challenge the stereotypes and expectations that surface in contemporary life.

Juried Select Winners: Next, our panel of international gallerists and curators choose the top 10 artists from the Showcase Winner group. These Juried Select artists are automatically eligible for consideration by our curatorial team for the year-end ArtSlant Prize exhibition and cash awards. You'll have a place to show as well as a way to sell!
