Revisiting the Maid

Pieter de Hooch, Emanuel de Witte, Nicolaes Maes, Gabriël Metsu, Hendrick Sorgh, Hendrick van Vliet, Johannes Vermeer at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Moving downstairs at the Met, from the Robert Frank exhibition to Vermeer one floor below it, was less jarring than one might expect. Frank’s introspective black and white images gave way to luminous 17th century color oil portraits that looked nearly photographic, bathed in translucent beams of Flemish light. Having spent long hours wandering through the dimly lit Dutch painting section at the Louvre, I arrived with enthused anticipation.
Vermeer’s signature work, The Milkmaid, on loan from the Rijksmuseum... [more]

Anselm Reyle at Gagosian Gallery- 24th St.
September 17th - October 24th
Posted
10/28/09
Entering Larry Gagosian’s 24th Street gallery in New York can be a daunting experience. The value of most of artwork on display often dwarfs the average person’s annual salary. It is one of the few, possibly even the only gallery I have ever been to that will not allow you to carry in a cup of coffee with you. The security guards hover suspiciously and are quick to instruct you to back away from the artwork. Though this is not unique to any one gallery, the employees sitting at reception rar... [more]

Good Time Horror

Francine Spiegel at Deitch Projects - Grand St.
October 1st - October 31st

There are some people who live for the chance to play dead, and there are those who would kill for the opportunity to live like a maniac for just one day. Fortunately there is a holiday for both types. If, however, a holiday isn’t enough one might want to look into an apprenticeship with Francine Spiegel. She is guaranteed to cut the chords on your typical routines and encourage you to embrace the totality of an other-worldly character.
Orchestrating a blend of horror and hilarity that... [more]

Untitled (unless this is the title)
by Charlie Schultz
Muntean & Rosenblum at Team Gallery
October 8th - November 7th

There’s something peculiar about finished works of art that have no title, but come with long parenthetical phrases that follow the word “Untitled.” It is like if your parents didn’t give you a first name, only a middle and surname. Wouldn’t that play games with your sense of self? No doubt your identity would be set to fluctuate and in all likelihood you’d just pick your own name anyway, a nickname, and that would be that. Problem solved. By not giving you a name, your parents... [more]

Joshua Stern’s solo show at Parker’s Box gallery titled “Straw Economy”, a mini-retrospective of work the artist produced in the last three decades, relies on text, signs and words in ways that recall the first two of the last three decades of contemporary art, giving it a slightly historical feel. In “Straw Economy” a clear path can be seen from simple text statements, through to complex image and word associations, and then finally, into work that only uses linguistic s... [more]

Michael Buckland at Sacco and Vanzetti Cultural Center
October 2nd - November 8th
Posted
10/18/09
To begin with, Michael Buckland is an artist who clearly revels in word and image contradictions. Much of the work in the Artist’s solo show at the Sacco and Vanzetti Cultural Center presents itself as signage that says exactly the opposite of what it demonstrates as an image. One work, entitled “Thumbs up”, includes the words “down with everything” wrapped around both a lifesaver shaped sign, and a hand signaling “thumps up” in the center. To add to the integral... [more]
