HOMESTYLE TINKERIN'  Ingenuity gathers the family around by Michael Gill Ingenuity organizer James Levin predicted that Ian Charnas' production Boltz — a campy mix of musical theater, dance and electrical tinkering presented by Case Western Reserve University — would be the iconic event that people remembered from Ingenuity 2009. Hopefully that's not true. The production's music and dance weren't badly realized, and the sustainability message was just about right for an after-school spe... [more]

After spending some time contemplating your impermanence on this earth in “The Quick and the Dead,” get out of the coffin of the galleries and enjoy some fresh air over at the Walker’s Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, located directly across the street.  It’s much more enjoyable in summer than in winter (especially a Minnesota winter), so take advantage of the weather.Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s Spoonbridge and Cherry (1985-88, top image) is an iconic cent... Curator Daniel Birnbaum chose a clever theme in this year’s curated biennale exhibition. It has almost endless scope and he did a fairly good job of making sure that the artists fit the topic – even if that did sometimes mean equating “making installations” with “making worlds”. The art was generally of high quality, interactive, thought provoking and yes, even fun.The first and most entrancing work was Lydia Pape’s “Ttéia I, C. 2002” – a black void shot thr... [more]

Scott McFarland at National Gallery of Canada April 11th - September 13th
Posted 6/16/09

Perhaps one of the most interesting exhibitions in the BC Scene British Columbian art festival was the very lucid photo exhibition of Scott McFarland. The Vancouver-based photographer has produced what looks like Jeff-Wall inspired staged narratives but while Wall was known for his filmic lighting and set ups, Macfarland employs a heavy element of post production. His simple landscapes, backyards and gardens evoke the crisp northern light and lush surroundings and of their settings (Vanco... [more]

Singularity, one of several exhibitions in 2009 curated by Clarke Reddy, featured artwork in a variety of mediums and subject matter. Very gifted artists in the Phoenix valley area, encourages this reviewer to say some extrarordinarily gifted and talented artists are living now in Arizona, that perhaps years to come will be seen as a golden age for Arizona artists.         Despite the grand blueprints for a thousand and one museums, Abu Dhabi is still a sleepy little town in terms of the arts with only three galleries. So when the government body Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) announced that Anne Baldassari, Director of the Musée National Picasso in Paris would curate "Emirati Expressions", a highly trumpeted exhibition of Emirati artists, tongues began to wag. Despite generally favorable coverage in the local press, what was on the w... [more]
