Crisis Moments
by Jolene Torr
Pawel Kruk at David Cunningham Projects
August 20th - September 19th
Posted
8/23/09
Entering artist Pawel Kruk’s exhibit is to bear a tense atmosphere; I’m not sure if each piece really peeled away layers of the artist’s (and spectator’s) personal anxiety or if each piece added to the anxiousness of the one before it.
When I walked in, a man was seated at a table under round lights, heavy and clinical like lights in the OR or an interrogation room. There was a TV set with a man reciting contemplations on art, distance, solitude and the material world; the audi... [more]

And Then The Pond Ripples
by Andy Ritchie
Daniel Rozin at The Exploratorium.
June 19th - September 20th
Posted
6/30/09
The Exploratorium is not a place for focus. It’s a haven of
manic, hyperventilating interactions on par with my old arcade, circa 1993. Childhood
admonitions (“Keep your hands in the bus!”) and acquired knowledge (“No sex in
the champagne room!”) kept my creeping hands at bay. Never the paragon of
self-restraint, I sternly strode to the rear of Exploratorium to greet myself
in Reflections, a large science exhibit
housing a small art exhibit—a very blurry line here, b... [more]

Intergalactic, Silver Boot Wearer
by Montgomery Rene
Helen Gilbert at asiwouldsay gallery
June 12th - August 7th
Posted
6/13/09
It was Helen Gilbert's first solo show, and she wore silver boots especially. Or not. I get the feeling that Helen would wear those space-y, hand-(her hand) made boots to grab a tin of baking soda from the corner store. That was a compliment. Silver boots, baking soda and Helen's paintings in Nature of the Protagonist: the opening night was explosive indeed with asiwouldsay's usual live music promises fulfilled. Nature of the Protagonist is an exhibition of not only Helen's aesthetic vibrations... [more]

The natural world and the human condition withstand a replication expose worthy of revisiting in Trying To Cope With Things That Aren’t Human: Part One at David Cunningham Projects. Curated by Ian Brown, DCP presents the first half of the traveling exhibition that presents a full diversity of work responding to self-reflecting notions post-nature, its examination crossing video, photography, installation, sculpture, and mass mailing.
Notwithstanding the energizing of neo-shama... [more]

The Language of Structure
by Jolene Torr
Jordan Essoe at Ampersand International Arts
January 16th - February 28th
Posted
2/9/09
Visiting Ampersand to view Jordan Essoe's "Semaphores" is a unique appointment-only experience in which the very warm and accommodating gallery director and founder, Bruno Mauro, arranges for me to meet with Essoe, a serene and baby-faced young man who speaks softly with a slight hesitance or lingering over his diphthongs.
Essoe brings me first to a relatively literal painting of children playing soccer and explains the context of this piece, "Those Code Systems in Which Not All... [more]

Graffiti Archaeology
by Natalie Hegert
Posted
1/4/09
Graffiti Archaeology is an interactive website designed by Cassidy Curtis, devoted to the discovery of how graffiti walls change over the years. You can take a trip through time, exploring these famous, mostly Bay Area spaces as they've evolved through the inscriptions of hundreds of individuals, artists, and writers. Graffiti Archaeology is a portal, a way of visualizing the layers of paint on a tagged-up wall, making tangible the history of the walls and the countless names, stickers, pos... [more]
