Without repetition, things cannot organize.
Factory or site, casting, stacking, welding, mortaring, in rhythm and in line.
Organization and redistribution of information comprise art--well, comprise many things. Organization is the broadest level (the widest plinth) of creative thinking.
Some machines were designed to further organize and smoothen out variability in the human touch, to preserve and replicate the or... [more]

Life in Tehran means several different things certainly, and I think in the West, it’s common to polarize the possible meanings based on obvious stereotypes and newswire-fueled assumptions. It’s easy that way. But in approaching this collection of modern art from Tehran, a complex intellectual tension surfaces as the artists are responding, surely, to an aggressively political and religious society but also attempting to reveal another richer layer in the story along with the symbols... Everything in Brazil's modern culture it seems is celebrated with an exclamation point. And the current show at YBCA promises just that: "originality of the culture of people who live in the tropics." Here, the Tropicaìlia art movement is loudly explored, portraying a uniquely Brazilian art culture. I was, however, left reeling not from the surprise of innovation but by the bold, dizzying colors and the overwhelming aroma of coconut and suntan oil (actual smells!). More cloying wer... [more]
Six monitors, each dedicated to a familiar performance of motherhood: Meryl Streep in Kramer vs. Kramer, Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts in Stepmom, Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest, Diane Keaton in The Good Mother and Shirley MacLaine in Postcards from the Edge, scenery and context carefully cut out, placing each actress against a black background. Their dialogue is cut and layered, sighs interject; cries and laughter overlap as each act out frustrations of motherhood. Candice Breitz’s Mother... [more]
Ara Peterson’s new show at Ratio 3 initially strikes the viewer as a somewhat cryptic dialogue between two distinct, but subtly imbricated bodies of work. The first continues Peterson’s meditation on geometric abstraction, developing the technocratic bent that has characterized his signature hybridization of Op Art, Neo-geo and ’60s psychedelia. Certainly visually arresting, his wall reliefs and sculptural volumes are also very much about process. Each incredibly labor intensive work... [more]
Ari Marcopolous’ mid-career survey currently on view at BAM/PFA features a number of the artist’s meticulously produced zines and other related ephemera displayed (perhaps somewhat appropriately) under glass. Removed from circulation and placed in vitrines, these graphic, self-produced publications seem fragile, perhaps almost relics of a bygone era that went the way of small press 45s. But then again, these are scrappy little suckers—and it seems a bit premature to foreclose the... [more]

I have taken this workshop with Shiloh and Elizabeth and it was one of the most phenomenal workshops I have ever taken! They create an environment that is sacred, inspirational, fun and transformational. The painting I created hangs proudly on my wall and, in fact, friends and family want my art for presents - and I have NEVER considered myself an artist. Thank you both for creating this incredible experience. [more]

In a darkened room, twenty-five faces – all in a neat row – are singing at you. Some with their eyes closed, some nodding their head to a beat you can’t hear, some in tune, some out of tune, all singing. There is no music other than the singing of these twenty-five individuals. There are too many voices – they’re not all singing in unison – and at first it becomes unclear what song they’re singing. Lyrics start to come forward: “hold on world, world, hold on/ it’s gonna b... [more]
