A portrait, the same as any other type of artwork, will reveal a relationship between the artist and the subject matter. It is made from a personal point of view of the artist. It points to a certain background of both the artist and the model, no matter if the model is the artist him/herself, or someone else.
I have in my slideshow several portraits, some are not self portraits as such but they all have a meaning related to myself, figures that contain information about my own feelings as much as they contain information about the environment I am living in, material and emotional.
I think that an artwork, irrespective of the characters depicted, will always reveal the artist's own world and personality.
I wish I was me, I wish I could paint, I wish I would paint, I wish I was a bird, the green self, the soft self, they are all kind of self portraits. If you wish to figure out what they reveal, I am glad to confirm or infirm your readings.
Good luck with your assignment.
