In an American Craft Council show in San Francisco Elizabeth Lundberg will showcase some of her favorite artistic endeavors; bowls, sculptures, utensils, and vases of all sizes and shapes, brought to life (or as Lundberg says “taking a former life and being able to then give it a second life,” ) from storm- felled trees.

A former IT girl, Lundberg left the world of technology to pursue her art with a heightened focus at age 50. Now, she spends her days deciphering the properties of wood, studying and analyzing growth patterns, character and grain on hardwood trees. If they have what she wants, she cuts free the pith and starts drying the tree in sections. Shaped with a lathe, the final process of some pieces is a visual representation of her creative side: burning, carving, and embellishing the pieces, readying them for sale and show. “The minute I put a hunk of wood on the lathe, I knew that’s what I wanted to do in my other life,” Lundberg said.

The American Craft Council show is at Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion in San Francisco August 3rd to the 5th. Over 230 artists will be participating this year.
