On February 2012, 17 year old Trayvon Martin was visiting his father in Florida. He went to pick up Skittles and an iced tea at the local 7-11. Upon returning to the gated community, he was followed, confronted and then shot by the local neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was studying criminal justice and is one class short of a degree. Local police in Sanford, FL refused to arrest the confessed shooter due to the "stand your ground" law on the books. Only after massive rallies around the country, did the local authorities start to move in the right direction and arrest the shooter.
Some of the events leading up to this killing were various burgularies in this neighborhood by suspected black perpetrators, which led to the stereo-typing of black youth, which set the stage so to say. Trayvon Martin came to be suspected wearing a hoodie and gold capped teeth, which is no crime. He was completely unarmed. If Zimmerman, had only been carrying a taser or less lethal weapons, perhaps Martin would be alive today.
There are 10 horizontal and 5 vertical rows of Skittles colors representing the $150,000 bail initially posted on Zimmerman.
