Matthew Adam

Repose in the Scabbard

April 2010
Oil, rags, cardboard, staples, acrylic on canvas
34 x 25.5 x 2 inches

This work developed unexpectedly out of a pile of studio scrap heaped onto a canvas one day out of frustration. Slowly I shaped a surrealist image out of the forms from reading the form and movement. Just as the scars of some cuts in life never fade, there is a tube of adhesive in the center of the painting which never dries. This work employs the flemish 7 layer technique in the central figure.
