During this time, before the Internet, distance limited connection to others. My life as a young child in Korea felt very distant and unreachable; I felt like a stranger in Austrian culture. Years later as a teenager, I returned to my native country Korea, and again felt like a stranger. Somehow it was more complicated and difficult to readjust back to my native country’s cultural system than it was to adapt to the initial move to Austria. As I began to adjust to Korean life, I created a duplicate identity that coexisted with the one that formed in Austria, never fully able to adjust to either country. Neither Korean nor German took the place of the dominant and more comfortable language for me to speak; I remained slightly alien to both. A tension arose from the boundary between these two opposing identities.

The philosopher, Henri Bergson, explores how individuals arrive at different understandings of the world through intuition. Bergson demonstrates intuition as the reverse of a person’s behavioral thought process. He uses the example of the multiple possibilities of the color orange to demonstrate this “turn of experience” where experience becomes concerned with utility, and therefore becomes human experience. Every person has his own idea of the color orange based on his experience in the world, and there are infinite possibilities in combining the primaries red and yellow in order to arrive at orange.

In my work I use the concept of intuition in an attempt to grasp the complex multiple identities of the self, which I depict through the act of spraying layers of pigment on a surface. Though these sprayed layers never congeal into one, they remain connected due to their proximity, one on top of another, forming a whole self, and whole painting, while maintaining independence.

The viewer experiences my work through his habitual thought process of synthesizing ideas based on his particular past experiences. However, the viewer is only able to access the surface of the painting. Each color field is a different level of density that depends on how many times it is layered. The division of the surfaces represents the different duration of the time it took to apply the layer.

Through my mediation from one layer to another, I am trying to find the relationship between these layers as well as the relationship between myself and the painting, the viewer and the painting (by way of these layers), and eventually myself and the viewer. This experience of relating over and over in different iterations is how I can begin to connect not only the varied layers inherent in the creation of each painting, but also connect to the individuals viewing my work. Thus, I am able to create continuity out of a process that is built on the accumulation of separate parts. Through my painting, I want viewers to also feel this process of attempting to connect beyond the surface.
Wed, 12 Nov 2014 13:06:27 +0000 Abstact Circle Mon, 21 Mar 2011 08:16:58 +0000 Acme Studios Associate Artist Residency
Acme Studios International Residencies Programme

Associate Artist Residency

Acme International Residencies Programme is now accepting applications directly from artists for our Associate Artist Residency (AAR) programme. People took the advantage of the opening ceremony fixed at the weekend to troop out in large numbers with their families and friends to savour the rich and energetic display of the Atiliogwu and Ejionu dance of the Igbos of the eastern Nigeria, the Eyo masquerade from the west, the Fulani warrior dance from the north; showing the beauty of their men and the elegantly handsome women, the pottery and dance display of the Nasarawa people of the middlebelt and the Niger Deltans flamboyant dance.

The royalty of the tribes can be seen from the costumes of the Edos’ to the wonderful royal regalia of the Hausas which were displayed during the Durbar show (the horses too were very well given a royal garment for the wonderful and colourful occasion). From the nkwa umu agbowo and ekombi (the dance of the maidens) with their anklets and beautiful jigida adorned waist (wriggling endlessly to the rhythm of the land) to the mba mmiri dance of the Calabaries. The enyatu (dance of authority) cultural dance vibrated to the rhythm emanating from their 80 years old ekwe; wooden gong.

The women are beauty inexplicable; from the richly oiled hair style decorated with royal beads to the healthy looking and well polished ebony skin radiating in the sun, responding tirelessly to the vibrations of the sound; the sounds of our beginning. The onyonyo (women in the palace on their ceremonial attire) dance from Calabar was an elegance to behold.

The unique thing about this event is the unity of purpose and blend of so many culture and traditions in a single group outing. The masquerade displayed was breathtaking. It was a parade of the soul of the belief and ancestral life of the people. Each masquerade, dance steps and the music has a story that goes back to ancient times (each masquerade is perceived as an ancestral spirit).

The Society of Nigerian Artists Abuja chapter mounted an art exhibition at the art and craft village as a nutmeg to chew to kolanut of this great event. It was a display of art works from predominantly young artists of the association.

The boat Rigata was another display by various riverine communities. It was a showcase of the professionalism and skills of the fishermen and warriors of the communities. They paddle their boats round and round a circle dancing and singing the songs of their hearts. The warriors dance with their boats sailing away, piercing the air with their wooden spears, while the women among them paddle along the men in different boat, singing and dancing.

The masquerades represent the god of the river as evident in the carved aquatic animals on their heads; fish, crab, etc. it was beautiful and energetic, it was spiritual and intoxicating.

Thu, 26 Nov 2009 08:23:02 +0000 Albertus Van Wyk
Former dental practicioner I converted to Art practice almost Naturaly during a journey of one year in New Caledonia, where i was invited to go in a creative hermitage in the bush at Tao to prepare an Exposition of my work with Drifted Wood's .I produced about 30 opera's , mainly with a method that i called 'pigmentary impregnation' where the colors penetrates the wood. Pleased with the result's but not satisfied as far as the creative standard's ,I thought it would be nice to work with metal on these object's ,of course my first idea was to use Bronz.Since i am pretendet to have a creative mind i started creating, in the bush and during my journey there intellectualy my specific alloy:Aenors a quartenary composition of some gold, some more silver, much cuper to create mass and as much iron molecules as gold to ad a specific electromagnetic resonance to the alloy, wich turned out to be also the signature of my work's!( if it react's to a magnet i'ts aenors)
The trademark Aenors is the alphabetical 'order' of the word Reason!
I reallised the first fusion end 1994 at my return in Europe ,more precisely in San Remo at a friend's lab.
For the need of the suspension of a steel ball in the ciprypedium of an opera "il messagero" i created a derivate of pewter by adding sporadic elements,i lowered the fusion point about10°degrees, the aim is to bring it under the 100 degrees celcius, but the creation is there and i call it Spirit of Aenors ,i am still researching and use it as adjuvance to Aenors Art Alloy in unique peaces; and as samples in my 75€valuetainer75€, to create a builded in lottery in this multiconceptual colectors item with fixed refundable nominal value.
Taking in consideration my multiconçeptual collectors items, the limited serials of these items ,the unique specific alloy's ,the commercial approuch of my art totaly unreleased ,where i propose to buy back after 36 month's my collectors items if sealed and sound with a benefit for the art amateur /investor.
Tue, 04 Aug 2009 01:53:53 +0000 Wed, 09 Sep 2009 10:08:07 +0000 Alexander Dubrovskiy
Painter Alexandtr Dubrovskiy, impressionism, Florentine mosaic in Cathedral of the St. Mine (Mariott, Alexandria, Egypt).
Thu, 09 Apr 2009 05:41:56 +0000 Alice Yard
Alice Yard is the backyard space of the house at 80 Roberts Street, Woodbrook, Port of Spain.

This was once the house of Sean Leonard’s great-grandmother.
