The idea behind DEEP SURFACE evolved in discussions between Al-Douri and Morioka as a means of describing the common ground between their highly individualistic styles. It concerns the act of painting as much as its final result.
To the artist, each passing instant of time leaves its imprint indelibly within the work surface, scattering through it a rich layering of artifacts. As the surface deepens, it is filled with the traces of what once was and what will come to be. To Al-Douri and Morioka, it is all one.
It is this continuum, this history—the communication across time and through space, moment to moment—that breathes life into these paintings. From the soaring angularity of Al-Douri's powerful, elemental forms to the exuberant spontaneity of Morioka's vibrant lines and animated glyphs, the works of both appear to owe their existence to a balancing act of matter and energy as magical and delicate as that of life itself.
