> DESCRIPTION

As a follow up to his critically acclaimed debut solo exhibition titled The Gloaming, Whatiftheworld / Gallery is pleased to announce a new solo presentation by up-and-coming young painter Andrzej Nowicki. Drawing on references and influences outside of the traditional highbrow art context, Andrzej Nowicki shows a playful engagement with ephemera from popular culture. Nowicki makes paintings and drawings that create parallel universes where people and objects multiply and metamorphose into ever more strange visions. His disquieting dreamlike tableaux combine the seductive allure of a fairy tales with the perverse playfulness of Surrealism and the insight of speculative fiction to create disordered narratives.

While continuing to work with these narratives in his newest body of work, Nowicki begins to engage with the more formal aspects of his practice. Consciously exploring the use of pattern and repetition in the medium of watercolour and collage.

ABOUT ANDRZEJ NOWICKI

Born (1981) in Kielce, Poland, he obtained his Masters degree from the Michaelis School of Fine Art. A recipient of the Irma Stern Scholarship (2005 - 2007), he presented his debut solo exhibition at Whatiftheworld / Gallery in August 2007 to both critical and commercial success. Titled The Gloaming, it contained a selection of his disquieting gouache and watercolour paintings and drawings. After completing a collaborative session at David Krut Print Workshop, he presented Sleep Depot (March 2008), a collection of watercolours, prints and lone oil on canvas and single monoprint. Recently selected as a Bright Young Thing by Art South Africa Magazine, Andrzej Nowicki currently lives and works in New York City.
