Recoat are bringing together two artists, Will Barras and Rue Five. The pair are quite different, Barras is a 37 year-old London based designer who started out creating record sleeves and bmx graphics while Rue Five is a 21 year-old Stirling based artist whose roots lie in graffiti art, yet the work they are producing now has much in common and compliments each other well.

The pair move in similar circles, meeting up at various exhibitions over the years, but after bumping into each other again after being invited to Banksy’s Cans II Festival last year, and due to their mutual appreciation, they decided they needed to work together, hence “Crystal is the New Wolf”.

When the unlikely pair approached Recoat to curate their first exhibition together, they were delighted,

“Will and Jules are both so well known within this genre, our audience will love to see them together for the first time. They both have lovely mark making skills and the work carries layered narrative, exploring themes like nostalgia, relationships, loneliness and culture. We’re really excited about showing this interesting exhibition from such an unusual yet in-tune partnership.”

The pair are creating a series of drawings, both of their own work and collaborations and creating a large scale art piece in the space.

WILL BARRAS

Barras is a member of the infamous Scrawl Collective. He divides himself between directing animation, designing graphics and creating artwork for his busy exhibition schedule. He participated in the highly acclaimed “Wooster on Spring” exhibition that people waited for five hours in line to see in New York City. He was invited to exhibit at the Scope Art Fair on the occasion of Art Basel, Miami at the close of 2008, having participated in shows in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Brussels, Edinburgh, Mayrhofen, Oslo, Copenhagen, Bratislava, Cologne,  Budapest, Warsaw and London over the last two years.

RUE FIVE

As young as Rue Five is his exhibition history is impressive, having exhibited extensively in Scotland, in London and Philidelphia since starting out in 2005. The local media are equally impressed:

“ Stirling's artistic trailblazer, ” - Stirling News

“ One of the area’s hottest talents. Stirling’s most original young artist… draws together the ephemera of the city with acrylic, aerosol, oils, ink and graphics.” - Stirling Observer

His work comprises a variety of mediums including painting, illustration, typography, sculpture,
photography, film, animation and graffiti. His work caries a certain melancholy drawing inspiration from a family history of mental illness, human behaviour, survival, instinct, folk art, craft, vintage signage and street culture.
