In an unprecedented partnership, Brazilian and Dutchman photographers Marcelo Greco and Leo Divendal open the exhibition Internal Affairs, at Espaço Ophicina. For this show, each artist presents three independent series with images and texts – Dissipatio, Lágrimas Perdidas and Internal Affairs, by Greco; No Matter, Hotel du Nord and Inner Court, by Divendal. With these pieces, their intent is to discuss the tricks of a private world, their intimacies, their pain and their internal/external reactions about these feelings.
Inspired by personal experiences and by observing the surrounding elements of their lives, these two friends do find in the process of creating images a way of dealing with facts that permeate their worlds. In this sense, their search for photography’s poetic potential is their way to built strong narratives.
In Internal Affairs, Marcelo Greco investigates everyday themes as women, flowers, human bodies, birds and certain locations – always within an autobiographical atmosphere. In Dissipatio, he shows an urban environment of isolation, disintegration and alienation. Lágrimas Perdidas, at last, consists of a deeper process of mourning, with the sea as a background for his visual story.
Meanwhile, Leo Divendal works with a fantasy world, which deeply exposes relationships between real-life characters, using a combination of poetry, narrative and photos. In No Matter and Hotel du Nord, certain eroticism is presented, sometimes integrated into a more urban environment. In Inner Court, the artist writes a brief love story on account of a misunderstanding.
With an expografic project not traditionalist at all, suspended panels and surroundings designed exclusively for the show create a mystery context. Images and texts gain space on the walls, books exposed to be handled by the public – everything is connected to their personal dramas, the fantastic cities that oppose to scenarios of a past, a fiction that contrasts with imaginary and realistic aspects.
