The Aldrich will premiere Untitled (Capitol), 2013, a monumental, five-panel charcoal drawing of the US Capitol building. Presented alone in the Museum's largest gallery, Longo's masterfully rendered artwork, its dimensions reminiscent of a cinema screen, will command as much awe as its subject. To realize a work on this scale, the artist conducts a series of small studies, a practice he's engaged in throughout his decades-long career. A selection of one hundred of these studies will fill the Museum's atrium, offering both a window into the artist's practice and an archive of his work to date. Longo's commitment to drawing is unwavering, evidencing an extreme dedication to and investigation of a single medium, its ability to translate the incessant chatter of media into a sustained mediation, and to represent not just the artist's discrete interests, but a collective, image-unconscious reflective of life itself. This exhibition is curated by Aldrich curatorial consultant Kelly Taxter.
