Gallery 263 is pleased to present Meta, a national juried exhibition of art-about-art. The exhibit features 48 artists.
Art originated early in human history, before societies formed or the invention of written language. Over the centuries, the definition of "art" has been disputed and re-developed continually. Inevitably artists are intrigued by the history, traditions and "rules" that make up the contemporary art world. The need to reference, critique, play and draw attention to the context of art within art is a natural progression. We call this "META". The discussion has expanded beyond the history and process of art to include visual interpretations of the art world itself: the infrastructure, politics and economies of art. Inspiration emerges from admiration to disgust. Meta demonstrates the vast use of this self-referential concept in video, photography, painting, drawing, and sculpture.
