International artist-in-residence Miguel Palma (Portugal) has developed a “Remote Desert Exploration Vehicle” that investigates ways in which meaning of place, particularly in remote desert environments, is created and communicated. Palma's work in this exhibition engages issues through the lens of exploration: military history in Arizona and the Southwest, the military’s role in desert preservation, the history of Manifest Destiny and colonialism in populated places, strategies of adaptation and the role of technology in desert survival.
