The second artist commission for our Sunley Gallery is Tempo para Respirar (Breathing Time) by
Brazilian artist Maria Nepomuceno.
From Friday 14 September to 24 March 2013, Nepomuceno’s exuberant installation will fill the double-height ground floor gallery.
This new work, Nepomuceno’s most ambitious to date, brings the energy and colour of Brazil, with its many cultures, colourful carnivals, and dramatic rainforests, into this inspiring space that overlooks Margate seafront.
Nepomuceno uses traditional Brazilian craft techniques, weaving straw, stringing and piling beads, and sewing brightly-coloured ropes into draping coils and flower-like forms. She also incorporates ceramics and shiny over-sized beads.
Be a part of this immersive environment, whether it be sitting amongst the work’s many colours and textures, hearing the sounds of Brazil emerging from the work, or relaxing in a hammock looking out to sea, or taking part in the many projects and workshops we have at the gallery this summer/autumn (see below for details).
In late August and early September, Maria Nepomuceno will be at Turner Contemporary creating her new work, and there are a number of ways opportunities for visitors, artists and craftspeople to get involved:
Every Tuesday and Friday 28 August –11 September
1- 4pm, free drop in
Twice a week, visitors can join series of workshops run by Maria Nepomuceno where they can see how her work is made and help create and thread clay beads that will form part of the installation. Everyone is welcome to these free workshops.
Community Rope Exchange
24 - 31 Aug, Tues to Sun 10am – 6pm Turner Contemporary
In order to complete her artwork, Maria Nepomuceno needs rope. She wants to include ropes from the local area among those she will bring from Brazil. Please bring your spare ropes of any size to the Information Desk at the gallery during the week of 24 August (or to Ramsgate Harbour during the Summer Squall on 26 Aug, 12pm) and exchange them for colourful new Brazilian ropes.
