During the FAll of 2007, Michael Rich spent 5 months on a sabbatical in Tuscania, Italy where he made a series of drawings in a daily meditation on the life, history and surroundings of the Maremma region. The drawing, the best of which will be on exhibit at Old Spouter Gallery this summer, are abstract reflections on the light, color and natural rhythms of the Italian countryside. Influenced greatly by the Etruscan tomb paintings of Tarquinia, new elements of figuration, suggestion of birds, leaves and boats pay a kind of homage to the ancient cultures and their life on the Mediterranean Sea.
A selection of new, works in oil and wax, painted since Michael's return to the States will also be on view.
