Jason Hirata’s solo exhibition titled Bubble Tea will present a series of photo-based, poster scale works revolving around the preparation, distribution, consumption and enjoyment of this sweet, tea-like fruit drink whose popularity is rapidly expanding. Producing digital prints that are composites (via Photoshop) of stock imagery purchased online and the artist’s own work, Hirata will install his posters in Gallery4Culture as well as around the city in various establishments responsible for the production and sale of bubble tea. Viewers can make the connection in chance encounters where art and commerce collide.
Though he has been actively exhibiting for only a handful of years, Jason Hirata’s work has garnered a good deal of attention. Often performance-based and collaborative, Hirata creates social commentaries steeped in pop culture. He has a demonstrated proficiency for applying creative solutions to conceptual ideas, transforming them into installations that, while subversive, are utterly engaging.
