> DESCRIPTION

The Hatchery: East of Fresno is an art event to take place in Badger, California (approx 54 miles east of Fresno) that will bring together multiple artists and performers from the West and East coasts of the US, and also including international participants, at a unique site evolved from successive layers of prior communities.

The exhibition will focus on site-specific work,  new work that responds in some way to the physical environment of The Hatchery, and/or its layered and complex histories.

The collection of buildings that was to become the Hatchery was originally built as a drug rehabilitation facility, which was then re-purposed as a Muslim religious community. Its current use as a seasonal arts destination in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada makes the Hatchery the latest realization of purposeful community, with its prior histories embedded in the remains of the former ones, which include an abandoned airstrip, classroom spaces, community gathering places and abandoned trailers.
