Oil and Water
Gallery Project presents Oil and Water, a multi-media exhibition in which 32 local, regional and national artists explore two of the world’s most precious and sensuous substances. Oil and water shape world events. Nations rise and fall depending on how these essential resources are acquired and used. Wars are fought over them. Their use and misuse, scarceness and over-abundance impact people and nations around the world. Artworks in the exhibition explore this vast topic from a range of viewpoints, focusing literally and symbolically on the wet, the oily, and the impossible oppositional mix.
Gallery Project is a fine art collaborative. Its mission is to provide a venue for contemporary
art that is culturally aware, individualistic, courageous, and thought provoking. Gallery Project
is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Oil and Water (Do Not Mix)
Both are coveted resources of our planet, rife with meaning. Extreme differences in their molecular structure preclude bonding….”like oil and water”.
Water makes up sixty percent of the human body. It covers two thirds of the earth’s surface, although ninety eight percent of that is ocean water and undrinkable, but life-supporting nonetheless, as the provider of seafood, a major and active component of the world’s ecosystem and a mode of transportation, namely for shipping goods….WATER….a symbol of life--purifying, still, baptismal, recreational, treacherous, polluted, scarce--future wars may be waged over it.
(Crude) OIL is the basis of a war in progress--a polluting energy source, fuel for transportation, shipping, manufacturing…replaceable, but how soon?
Artworks in the exhibition explore the vast topic of OIL and WATER, whether focusing on the wet, the oily, or referencing their impossible oppositional mix.
