Terje Nicolaisen’s works range from the subtle, the humorous and the incisive one-liner, through to the ambiguous, the delicate and the poetically suggestive. This solo exhibition presents a range of the artist’s drawings, serial works and paintings.
At one extreme, Terje Nicolaisen (b. 1964) creates small, unassuming ink drawings, and at the other, complex paintings on paper. He has also worked with a personal form of documentation of his projects, which has spawned an unusual archive of inventories, and with unique artist books.
Nicolaisen has made portraits of numerous people from the world of culture. Many of them are on permanent display at Litteraturhuset in Oslo. This exhibition features several of his early series of drawings and artist books, together with works created specially for the event, which reflect on the artist’s prosaic workaday routines in his office and studio.
Having trained at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art from 1993 to 1996 and at the Art Academy in Bergen in the period 1996–97, Nicolaisen now lives and works in Oslo. He has had numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, including: “MPT – Museo de Pasatiempo (Forstørret Versjon)”, Kunsthall, Oslo, 2010, “Artist Statement”, Tromsø Kunstforening, Drawing Art Biennial 2010, Momentum Kunsthall, Moss, “The mind of this death is unrelentingly awake”, OCA 2009, “Bøker, Tekst og Tegning”, Galleri Riis, 2008, “Salon”, Kunstraum D21, Leipzig, Germany, 2007.
