Instead of becoming a focal point within landscape or architecture, Susan Philipsz’s audio installations spatially dramatize their setting. Working solely with her own voice, and performing her own arrangements of both popular and folk songs, Philipsz imbues the spaces her work inhabits with introspection and personal experience. For this exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Aspen Skiing Company, Philipsz will install a work under the Trestle Bridge on Snowmass Mountain. The subtle imperfections and intimacy of Philipsz’s voice set against the vastness of the surroundings perfectly mirror the confluence of personal and collective experience that is the key to Philipsz’s work.

Susan Philipsz was born in Glasgow, and currently lives and works in Berlin. She is a 2010 nominee for Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize, which is presented annually to a UK artist under the age of 50.
