> DESCRIPTION

All Over is a multimedia installation informed by the artist’s firsthand experience of conflict as a young woman in Tannourine, Lebanon. Drawing on the dichotomy of planes as symbols of war and birds as symbols of peace, Diehl’s work features 611 hand carved planes and birds suspended in the shape of a globe. Using glycerin, an ingredient mostly commonly found in soap, Diehl alludes to historical wartime episodes in which scraps of soap were collected to increase production of its explosive by-product, nitroglycerine. The work is set against a backdrop of projected footage of Lebanese olives groves, with a soundtrack of roaring wind that mimics the sound of war planes.
