> DESCRIPTION

Mark Klassen of Milwaukee and Lewis Koch of Madison both create artworks steeped in the politics and uncertainties of life after September 11, 2001. Klassen's Fixture Project, a series of sculptures and serigraphs of commonplace protective devices, reminds viewers that we are surrounded by objects designed to protect us from dangers both real and imagined. Klassen's sculptures are pristine, constructed facsimiles of their "real" counterparts; chilly and sterile, they evoke an unsettling atmosphere that emphasizes their role as protective talismans.
