The British video artist Simon Payne creates digital works that inv estigate the interplay of color\, movement\, and abstract form. Five of Pay ne’s short videos will be screened in MMoCA’s New Media Gallery\, adjacent to the main galleries on the second floor\, in conjunction with Ellswor th Kelly Prints\, from January 19 through April 28\, 2013.

Cou pling a limited color palette of red\, blue\, yellow\, cyan\, magenta\, gre en\, black\, and white—the primary and secondary colors constituting the st andard television test signal—with sequences of flickering geometric forms\ , Payne creates the illusion of pulsing motion and infinite color combinati ons. Although the artist’s fixed palette limits the number of actual colors that are present on screen\, the rapid editing of the video footage affect s viewers’ perception of color. The result is a rich visual experience in w hich the number of perceived color possibilities is impossible to quantify.
