The iconic photographs from Jerry Uelsmann's celebrated care er are given full range in this major retrospective organized by the Peabod y Essex Museum in Salem\, Massachusetts. Born in 1934\, Uelsmann is conside red a master of contemporary photography and a darkroom magician. His work is at once witty\, dreamlike\, mysterious\, and provocative. The exhibit co ntains 90 of his photographs\, including some never before exhibited. At th e core of the show are many examples of his most famous technique: seamless ly fabricating photographs from apparently unrelated negatives\, creating s cenes both imaginary and intensely real. The exhibit is Uelsmann's first re trospective in 40 years\, and also includes hand–bound books of his prints and a video of a 16 mm. film by Uelsmann.
