This exhibition presents the best of Danila Vassilieff's ach ievements and settles the vital questions of the profound influence and key position of this Russian émigré artist in the history of Australian art.\n

Comprising key paintings from the mid-1930s to mid-1940s\, a selecti on of works on paper\, and a major representation of sculpture\, the exhibi tion is supported by substantial archival material.


This project wi ll highlight Vassilieff’s role in redirecting modern Australia art toward t he expressive figurative tradition of Russian folk art and the artistic acc omplishments of designers for the Ballets Russes. It will also provide grou nd-breaking evidence of Vassilieff’s contribution to Sidney Nolan’s celebra ted Ned Kelly series.
