Paradise Lost exhibition to be held between 25 March and 24 July\, investigates nature embedded in the works of a number of contemporar y video and digital media artists. The thread that connects the 19 artists in the exhibition is the idea that a primal innocent nature is at odds with human civilization\, and that there may be a constant conflicting interact ion between nature and today's technological world.

This exhibi tion explores a number of issues that are core to our present and future li fe on this planet: our longing for an earthly paradise\, sustainability and development\, and the crucial confrontation of nature with culture\, indus try\, and technology. This exhibition challenges the idea of nature as a gi ft that can be modified at the will of man\, raising a series of issues abo ut the “nature” of nature itself. Historically\, the modern concept of natu re is essentially derived from the Romantic sensibility\; therefore the exh ibition examines how artists perceive\, know and experience nature in our p ost-modern world. There are a couple of underlying questions of the exhibit ion: Does an unspoiled natural world exist?  Is our notion of nature essent ially a cultural idea? Will the human footprint extend beyond a point of no -return\, leading to the destruction of the natural world? Will technology be the “new nature”?

During Paradise Lost exhibition\, İstanbul Modern invites speakers to examine the relationship between art and techno logy. The Education Department\, in cooperation with schools\, organizes wo rkshops discussing the issues around the concept of nature in our post-Roma ntic and post-modern world\, while developing interactive programs and hand s-on trainings for youths and families discussing the role of technology an d new media in contemporary art.
