The exhibition is good, and congrats to the artist. A good friend of mine told me a rather disturbing story recently. He had been working with scott for years, and scott has helped him a great deal. Recently scott has not been able to sell as much art to pay his bills and has resorted to throwing events to sustain his gallery. Scott openly admits his failure, in his bathroom there is a painting that says 'BLACKBALL' which he says he got an employee to make in order to remind him how his ex-wife ha... [more]

OVERLORDS BY TOM ESTES at Interlife Crisis It’s hard to remember a world without the internet. In its current pernicious state of velocity combined with a fathomless audience, the internet has become a dizzying source of daily information. According to a recent survey, we now spend almost half our waking hours either online, on the phone, or watching television. The flow of information has continued unabated and transmission of images has accelerated to become a source of daily reality for most u... [more]

Jonathan Monaghan at Curator's Office January 14th, 2012 - February 18th, 2012

By John Anderson • January 20, 2012 A piece of advice before you step into Curator’s Office to watch Jonathan Monaghan’s new work of digitally animated video art: Suspend your ninja logic. Fans of Mortal Kombat will remember Sub-Zero as a silent masked combatant who fires ice projectiles from his hands, but in Monaghan’s video, “Sacrifice of the Mushroom Kings,” the ninja assassin has all the gusto of a bored kid at scout camp, seated in the gun turret of a Sherman tank, scrolling through his sm... Conflict and harmonyBeata Szechy exhibition opening at Jokai ClubDecember 12, 2009Since I knew that I was going to give the opening speech for Beata Szechy's exhibition, I wrestled with two things. First: a scientific, objective, art historian’s argument for the presentation. Second: a more personal tone that indicates the long-time relationship between "speaker" and "artist.” So in the end: my speech will be a mixture of both. I start with the fact that she isn't Beata to me, she is Bea. She was... [more]

Platters & Pourers Jurors Statement I want to thank all artists who submitted to the Platters and Pourers exhibition. It was a pleasure to be able to see the many fine examples of these two distinctive venues presented for viewing. And, as I had hoped, there was a great deal of variety in approach to interpreting these concepts. Some entries bypassed the function aspect that could be implied in these two “functional” categories to render sculptural interpretations. The open-minded attitudes and joyfu... [more]
