Art or Not?
by
4/2/15 Posted 4/2/15

Art or Not? Sometimes an artwork can spark outrage. An apparently harmless sculpture can cause a public riot that rages on for four decades... But after all, as the artist of the real artwork below once said: "Art isn't democratic." This week: One of the images described below is a pile of bricks. The other is an work of art. Can you tell the difference? #1 It is clear from the variety of materials employed by the artist in his sculpture and from the way in which he presents those materials... [more]

The show came about when curator Susan Isaacs, who teaches at Towson University, "started seeing a trend and realizing that a lot of artists were dealing with spiritual texts," said Gershman executive director Maxine Gaiber. The two worked together to bring the works to Philly." Read more at http://www.ph... [more]

Art or Not? Sometimes it can feel like the art world is having a joke at the public's expense. What makes an artwork "genuine" or an artful coincidence? Every Friday, ArtSlant invites you to put your tongue in your cheek, and consider which of the pictures below is a work of art. This week we ask: which of these images showing puppies at play is the real artwork? #1 This Chilean artist builds a strong sense of community into her interactive projects. This facility contains "sculptures" that function both as t... [more]

Art or Not? Who is to say what is art or not? One of the pictures with description below is a genuine art work: every Friday ArtSlant asks our discerning readers if they can spot the difference. This week: Errant appendages #1 This artist's hyperreal sculptures examine the fragility of the human body. Prosthetics are a frequent interest in his celebrated body of work spanning 1985-1993, which deals with the artist's personal experiences and seeks to redress the way we look at disability; the abandoned parts, hau... Art or Not? One of the pictures described below is a genuine art work: every Friday the ArtSlant team asks our discerning readers to indulge in a game of spot the difference. The answer will be revealed on our social media on Monday: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram. This week's theme is: mattresses. #1 "the artist, born in Glasgow, 1982, uses public space in this series of street interventions, where the artwork becomes part of it's background, barely perceived by the hurried commuter. Discarded every day objects a... [more]

Forgotten time capsule found in Boston lion sculpture
by
9/25/14 Posted 9/25/14

via Wikimedia Commons When copper statues of a gold lion and silver unicorn were installed above Boston's Old State House in 1901, the majestic creatures weren’t the only objects left for posterity. Inside the lion’s head was a sealed copper box filled with “things that will prove interesting when the box is opened many years hence,” wrote The Boston Globe at the time. The future is now. Earlier this month the lion and unicorn sculptures—emblems representing the building’s coloni... [more]

Ryan Reggiani at Hap Gallery March 6th, 2014 - March 29th, 2014

New York City-based artist Ryan Reggiani fills the gallery with an accomplished selection of works across a diverse range of media. The elegant sculpture "Untitled (Hanging)" employs straight and curved steel rods in immaculate counterposition. There is a sense of whimsy in another set of wall sculptures comprised of light bulbs and electrical cords within a metal frame. In a dramatic suite of standing concrete sculptures, the artist has stacked hollow forms around a central axis of metal rods, deco... [more]

It Was For the Children Photo of Simon Metke, 33, by Jana G. Pruden via Edmonton Journal Edmonton resident and small time weed dealer Simon Metke had no idea he was in possession of a stolen ancient Persian artifact valued at $1.2 million, so just chill out. Canadian officials raided Metke’s apartment late last month, and (according to the Edmonton Journal) Metke was just sort of like, woah, “What the heck is going on?” “There’s like 20 RCMP officers flooding my place, the sun... The exhibition is good, and congrats to the artist. A good friend of mine told me a rather disturbing story recently. He had been working with scott for years, and scott has helped him a great deal. Recently scott has not been able to sell as much art to pay his bills and has resorted to throwing events to sustain his gallery. Scott openly admits his failure, in his bathroom there is a painting that says 'BLACKBALL' which he says he got an employee to make in order to remind him how his ex-wife ha... [more]

Knox Martin Shines at LGTripp Gallery | Philadelphia In a theater in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon, we gathered shoulder-to-shoulder and to standing-room only capacity, to hear Knox Martin talk art. A true privilege to listen to the master artist, Knox enlightened us about the significance of 17th-century Dutch painters and placed their authority firmly in the history of art. He gifted us with the knowledge of Joan Miró, influenced by the Dutch... [more]

‘Annunciation’ by Tom Estes, one of the winners of Art Venice 2013, selected by The Biennale Project for The Venice Biennale. The title of the work ‘Annunciation’ is a Biblical term which means the announcing of ‘the incarnation’ or a materialization of the unrealized in a concrete form. The work therefore relates to multiple worlds; possible, fictional or desired worlds which though different from the one we live in, directly influences our own. The Venice Biennale (Italian: Biennale di... [more]
