Greg Sholette describes a “Mockstitution” as a mock institution that is an informally structured art agency that overtly mimics the name and to some degree the function of larger, more established organizational entities. Mockinstitution thrive within the voids left by an increasingly fractured social framework whose coherence is faltering thanks to rampant privatization, economic deregulation, ubiquitous social risk and day-to-day precariousness. 20160208064050-ghostlandscape2 Rose City Art Review

I stumbled across Liz Robb’s work while walking the streets of Portland in the PDX Window Project, housed by PDX CONTEMPORARY ART. I have always enjoyed the idea of utilizing the gallery window to entice and surprise people walking past and going about their day. The PDX Window Project allows unknowing passers by to interact with contemporary art as well as allows the art to interact more directly with the city environment. I came across Liz Robb’s work in much the same way. I was jus... [more]

It is hard to take any exhibition with a grandiose title such as Photography Since the Millennium seriously, but then again, we are just fifteen years into this new millennium. And there have not been any major strides in photography since the new millennium except for, well, the death of analogue, and video is accessible to all. Goodbye film, hello pixels. Has there been one year since the new millennium that has not seen a new release of cameras with enhanced numbers of pixels? It is the mega... [more]

Art or Not? You thought you had the art world sussed, but every once in a while it chucks you a curve ball. In short, sometimes art can seem like a joke. What if we strip away the nonsense jargon—is the artwork still an artwork? What if we attribute those words to a different image—does that make it more legit? Every week, we ask our readers to play a game of guess who, and enjoy moment of irreverance in an oh-so-serious art world... This week: which pile of goo was made by an art... [more]

Comicon North Article by Rebecca Romani It’s late on a Friday and the Studio Door Gallery on 30th is still going strong for the opening of its national Comicon-inspired show, “Strip: Caricature, Satire and the Funnies.” The caricature artist is working on a couple who looks thrilled to be getting mildly caricaturized and someone is busily adding lines to the communal canvas off in the corner. She is concentrating so hard she barely notices people looking over her shoulder. ... [more]

Art or Not? Love it or hate it, the PR machine that drives contemporary art world sometimes seems to take the piss. Is this endemic of laziness, or a stroke of genius? Can spin turn the humble hoover into a work of art? Someone thinks so, because they paid a whopping $11,801,000 for one of the vacuum cleaner artworks described below... #1 In 1990 the artist staged a series of spontaneous street interventions organized in tandem across the U.S. Prefiguring the pop-up art display, the apparently desultory rep... The show came about when curator Susan Isaacs, who teaches at Towson University, "started seeing a trend and realizing that a lot of artists were dealing with spiritual texts," said Gershman executive director Maxine Gaiber. Art or Not? Sometimes it can feel like the art world is having a joke at the public's expense. What makes an artwork "genuine" or an artful coincidence? Every Friday, ArtSlant invites you to put your tongue in your cheek, and consider which of the pictures below is a work of art. This week we ask: which of these images showing puppies at play is the real artwork? #1 This Chilean artist builds a strong sense of community into her interactive projects. This facility contains "sculptures" that function both as t... [more]

Art or Not? Who is to say what is art or not? One of the pictures with description below is a genuine art work: every Friday ArtSlant asks our discerning readers if they can spot the difference. This week: Errant appendages #1 This artist's hyperreal sculptures examine the fragility of the human body. Prosthetics are a frequent interest in his celebrated body of work spanning 1985-1993, which deals with the artist's personal experiences and seeks to redress the way we look at disability; the abandoned parts, hau...
