The Grandfather of Black British Photography's Apartment Is the Exhibition

Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK, is planning an ambitious undertaking: they want to move an artist’s whole flat into the gallery. And they need your help. There are precedents to this type of project—Song Dong’s landmark 2009 installation, Waste Not, springs to mind, as does Dawn Kasper’s reconstruction of her studio at the 2012 Whitney Biennial—but the subject of this project and the contents of his archive are not only of artistic interest, but also cultural, socio... Art or Not? Who is to say what is art or not? One of the pictures with description below is a genuine art work: every Friday ArtSlant asks our discerning readers if they can spot the difference. This week, it's a bad hair day. #1 "Painted in two separate periods, this picture has a complex history. In its original state, it showed a pink-faced man, wearing a white shirt and a black suit. It was painted in a deliberately simple, naive style, using household, rather than oil paint, and incorporated various ma... [more]

The exhibition is good, and congrats to the artist. A good friend of mine told me a rather disturbing story recently. He had been working with scott for years, and scott has helped him a great deal. Recently scott has not been able to sell as much art to pay his bills and has resorted to throwing events to sustain his gallery. Scott openly admits his failure, in his bathroom there is a painting that says 'BLACKBALL' which he says he got an employee to make in order to remind him how his ex-wife ha... [more]

For the month of November, ROY G BIV Gallery for Emerging Artists features an exhibition of photography by Jesse Kuroiwa and Nick George. Both artists challenge the possibilities of the photographic medium, either by questioning its claim to objectivity or by grounding artistic practice in its fundamental processes. Jesse Kuroiwa excavates unseen pasts in his photographs of barren American landscapes. He includes captions describing stories and events of Japanese internment in relation to the settings, which imbue the photographs... [more]
