Meta House
by Rebecca Catching

This non-profit art space, run by filmmaker Nico Mesterharm, is another axis of activity in Phnom Penh. On any balmy evening you’ll find the patio crowded with artgoers who flock there to see the exciting program of locally produced and foreign documentaries and films. There is a distinct German bent – with funding from the Goethe institute – but a surprising amount of variety. Previously screened films include “The Wave” 2008 a German film about a teacher creates a false dictatorship in... [more]

Reyum Institute of Arts and Culture

Though thoughts of Cambodia and art most often lead to images of 12th century moss-encrusted temple carvings, Cambodia in fact, has a very interesting emerging contemporary art scene. Phnom Penh boasts a growing number of galleries and spaces such as Metahouse (see flavor pic), the French Cultural Center and Reyum Institute of Arts and Culture. Sadly there is still scant funding for the arts and many young artist survive on less than 100$ a month. But scant funds breed a certain resourcefulness an... [more]

Dostal's Photodelics

Darya Dostal at Moscow Museum of Modern Art [10 Gogolevsky]
October 9th - October 24th

“Photodelics. Moscow” is the artistic debut of film producer Darya Dostal. It is devoted to the frantic energy of the city that appears in the photographs, shines with a radioactive glow in the light-boxes, come to life in the animation. The postcard views of Moscow dissolve in vaguely familiar outlines. The photographic frame trembles as unbalanced optics of a night-dweller, and even the static shots communicate the off-scale tempo of the city. Some pictures were purposefully taken out... [more]

HOMESTYLE TINKERIN'
Ingenuity gathers the family around
by Michael Gill
Ingenuity organizer James Levin predicted that Ian Charnas' production Boltz — a campy mix of musical theater, dance and electrical tinkering presented by Case Western Reserve University — would be the iconic event that people remembered from Ingenuity 2009. Hopefully that's not true. The production's music and dance weren't badly realized, and the sustainability message was just about right for an after-school spe... [more]
