Part of it is the ritual of gathering, and part of it is the phoenix-like transformation of the materials. The idea hunting and... [more]

This non-profit art space, run by filmmaker Nico Mesterharm, is another axis of activity in Phnom Penh. On any balmy evening you’ll find the patio crowded with artgoers who flock there to see the exciting program of locally produced and foreign documentaries and films. There is a distinct German bent – with funding from the Goethe institute – but a surprising amount of variety. Previously screened films include “The Wave” 2008 a German film about a teacher creates a false dictatorship in... [more]

Though thoughts of Cambodia and art most often lead to images of 12th century moss-encrusted temple carvings, Cambodia in fact, has a very interesting emerging contemporary art scene. Phnom Penh boasts a growing number of galleries and spaces such as Metahouse (see flavor pic), the French Cultural Center and Reyum Institute of Arts and Culture. Sadly there is still scant funding for the arts and many young artist survive on less than 100$ a month. But scant funds breed a certain resourcefulness an... [more]

HOMESTYLE TINKERIN'  Ingenuity gathers the family around by Michael Gill Ingenuity organizer James Levin predicted that Ian Charnas' production Boltz — a campy mix of musical theater, dance and electrical tinkering presented by Case Western Reserve University — would be the iconic event that people remembered from Ingenuity 2009. Hopefully that's not true. The production's music and dance weren't badly realized, and the sustainability message was just about right for an after-school spe... [more]

I’ve been away from the Toronto art scene for a number of years and was looking forward to revisiting the city that served as backdrop to the cultivation of my love for contemporary art. What I miss most about the Toronto approach towards exhibiting work are the conceptually curated, neatly packaged exhibitions that stimulate. The exhibition at The Power Plant, Universal Code, had me worried a bit. At first glance, the concept seemed too broad - a show designed for anything - ano... [more]

Pulp Fiction is a great exhibition that showcases a uniquely North American trend in art practice which sprung out of the 1990’s and continues on to this day.  It arose out of the need for emerging Canadian talent to find spaces and networks in order to collaborate and create new work. Because of a lack of funding and available exhibition spaces, artists sought out like-minded others, self-organized exhibition spaces and created opportunity for themselves. This led to the development of a... [more]

During the summer, the centre of Fine Arts in Brussels is exhibiting the French writer, narrative artist, photographer, filmmaker and occasionally detective Sophie Calle (1953-). A retrospective of her works which usually combine pictures and texts retrace the story of her life. Indeed Sophie Calle, as the tendency of some photographers such as Nan Goldin or Cindy Sherman, uses to stage herself as the focus of her art. However while entering the image and by extension the life of the artist, it is... [more]

Mark Flood, John Kleckner at Peres Projects Athens June 16th - July 27th

Never has defacement been so unabashedly stabby and consumer-culture critical as with Houston-based artist Mark Flood, nor as minutely crafted as with the Berlin-based American artist John Kleckner. Mischief-maker, identities specialist and sub-lingual alchemist Mark Flood layers various media and signs to render their meaning highly problematic, often ascorbic, sometimes bitingly astute; street signs are literally defaced with phrases, often conciously misspelled, that speak to the deepst subc...
