OVERLORDS BY TOM ESTES at Interlife Crisis It’s hard to remember a world without the internet. In its current pernicious state of velocity combined with a fathomless audience, the internet has become a dizzying source of daily information. According to a recent survey, we now spend almost half our waking hours either online, on the phone, or watching television. The flow of information has continued unabated and transmission of images has accelerated to become a source of daily reality for most u... [more]

The Art of Creation: Development of The Floor Show Exhibit Photo by Arthur Kozlovski Most people view an art show as a complete entity, with walls perfectly aligned with paintings, floors decorated with sculptures, tables loaded with fancy champagne and cheese. These facets are all part of the final presentation of an exhibition, but the process for this production is one that takes a lot of time, patience, and creativity in its own respect. Last week, I was lucky enough to be involved with... [more]

Not marble, nor the gilded monuments Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme; But you shall shine more bright in these contents Than unswept stone besmear'd with sluttish time. When wasteful war shall statues overturn, And broils root out the work of masonry, Nor Mars his sword nor war's quick fire shall burnThe living record of your memory. 'Gainst death and all-oblivious enmityShall you pace forth; your praise shall still find roomEven in the eyes of all posterity That wear this world out... [more]

The evening of June 14th hosted the opening of F_AIR's exhibition, The Summer Issue. Entering into a white facade of single, simple pieces, a tone is set and the ambiance thrives in the curiosity of finding further value through the minimum. The artist's stories are not told, their personal theme is not bombarded into the gallery, they only have a single piece of themselves to epitomize their work, and to create a story that ties the show together. Inevitably, the showing of single pieces from each... [more]

Life is short, and we all will die in the end. Sometimes we need reminding of these simple but powerful facts. The vanitas is a genre most associated with religious subject matter. It is included in religious images in order to tell the viewer that since life is short, they have to accept Christ before death, and also to say that there is more to life than just this fragile earthly one. Vanitas can be depicted as something as ephemeral as flowers or rotting fruit, and more often, the skull is use... [more]

Nick Cave at Seattle Art Museum March 10th, 2011 - June 5th, 2011

The artist Nick Cave has a little something for everybody. Do you like pastel colors and shiny objects? He’s got something for you. How about costume, performance and show? There’s some of that too. Ritual? Craftsmanship? Consumerism? Check.  There are so many cultural references sewn, glued and drilled onto Cave’s sculptures that they explode with social baggage. At the same time they somehow are able to separate from their materials, to discard their connotations and history for a sparkling, os... [more]

by
Sophia Dixon Dillo at Vertical Arts Gallery March 17th, 2011 - March 17th, 2011

Steamboat Springs — Without light, the color red wouldn’t be red. Blue wouldn’t be blue, and white wouldn’t be white. As Colorado artist Sophia Dixon Dillo studied painting at Colorado State University, she was captured by the perception of art through the reflection, refractions and absorptions of light, and it led her to abandon the paintbrush and try to capture the light as a medium of its own. “Light is ungraspable,” Dillo said. “You don’t see it if you’re not looking for...
