Recent Impressions and Experiences from
‘Biennale di Chianciano Terme 2009’
13th - 27th of September 2009
It is with my mind filled with hopeful joy and satisfaction I now sit down and summarise my views and reflections on the Biennale di Chianciano Terme 2009. Never in my life before have I seen or being a participant at such a high level quality exhibition of contemporary visual art, anywhere in the world. I'm also referrin... [more]

There is something very endearing about collecting – gathering scraps of cloth, discarded bits of plastic and working them into something startling and new. Part of it is the ritual of gathering, and part of it is the phoenix-like transformation of the materials. The idea hunting and... [more]

This non-profit art space, run by filmmaker Nico Mesterharm, is another axis of activity in Phnom Penh. On any balmy evening you’ll find the patio crowded with artgoers who flock there to see the exciting program of locally produced and foreign documentaries and films. There is a distinct German bent – with funding from the Goethe institute – but a surprising amount of variety. Previously screened films include “The Wave” 2008 a German film about a teacher creates a false dictatorship in... [more]

The works of ‘Beneath My Skin’ may be regarded with Western intuition and references, the viewer naturally connecting them to the works of great masters - Bacon, Schiele, Basquiat, De Kooning. And, certainly, we may also have the tendency to seek Vietnamese sources - Buddhism, sacred paintings, ancient rites - within each of artists - Do Hoang Tuong, Nguyen Minh Thanh, Dinh Y Nhi and Ly Tran Qunyh Giang. Yet, it would be a pity to entertain comparisons and parallels that are simplistic in na... [more]

Ingenuity gathers the family around
by Michael Gill
Ingenuity organizer James Levin predicted that Ian Charnas' production Boltz — a campy mix of musical theater, dance and electrical tinkering presented by Case Western Reserve University — would be the iconic event that people remembered from Ingenuity 2009. Hopefully that's not true. The production's music and dance weren't badly realized, and the sustainability message was just about right for an after-school spe... [more]

Sketches of the Underground

Tony Squance's first solo exhibition in Madrid was based on observations of people as they travelled to work in the underground system between six and seven o'clock in the morning; the paintings were based on sketches he made in situ.
Twelve years have passed since then. Architectural changes have been made; the trains are newer, the wagons are brighter, and the passages are wider. There is less dirt. There are gadgets to play with.
But little has changed in the bearing of the pe... [more]

It seems as if this is a lot of rambling just jumbled together, whichh is what it is, but when thought out it all makes a lot of sense. It's a perfect example of an artpiece ... a little thought and creativity added with common sense and you have a work of art.....written or painted ...it's art. and there you have it. [more]

Juan Muñoz- Humanity reconquered

Walking around in the Juan Muñoz exhibition is like a journey with strange people whispering, reading, looking or laughing. Silence and at the same time, conversation and loudness, are self-evident and exceed from the spaces.
Although he died quite young, Munoz acquired a particular artistic language. Visitors have to develop a real contact with the strangely displayed pieces to penetrate the artist’s world and make it their own.
Scenography plays an important role in understandin... [more]

by Stéphanie Bliard
Maurice de Vlaminck at CaixaForum Madrid

Visit the exhibition room in La Caixa Forum and enter French painter Maurice de Vlaminck’s universe. Considered to be one of the most radical painters of his time, Maurice de Vlaminck has managed to manipulate forms and colours to create a world of his own.
The atmosphere of the exhibition is well created and each painting displayed in chronological order from 1900 to 1915, his most productive period. It leads the visitor to understand the concepts and history of fauvism, with de Vlaminck's andscapes... [more]
