Part of it is the ritual of gathering, and part of it is the phoenix-like transformation of the materials. The idea hunting and... [more]

This non-profit art space, run by filmmaker Nico Mesterharm, is another axis of activity in Phnom Penh. On any balmy evening you’ll find the patio crowded with artgoers who flock there to see the exciting program of locally produced and foreign documentaries and films. There is a distinct German bent – with funding from the Goethe institute – but a surprising amount of variety. Previously screened films include “The Wave” 2008 a German film about a teacher creates a false dictatorship in... [more]

HOMESTYLE TINKERIN'  Ingenuity gathers the family around by Michael Gill Ingenuity organizer James Levin predicted that Ian Charnas' production Boltz — a campy mix of musical theater, dance and electrical tinkering presented by Case Western Reserve University — would be the iconic event that people remembered from Ingenuity 2009. Hopefully that's not true. The production's music and dance weren't badly realized, and the sustainability message was just about right for an after-school spe... [more]

I’ve been away from the Toronto art scene for a number of years and was looking forward to revisiting the city that served as backdrop to the cultivation of my love for contemporary art. What I miss most about the Toronto approach towards exhibiting work are the conceptually curated, neatly packaged exhibitions that stimulate. The exhibition at The Power Plant, Universal Code, had me worried a bit. At first glance, the concept seemed too broad - a show designed for anything - ano... [more]

Pulp Fiction is a great exhibition that showcases a uniquely North American trend in art practice which sprung out of the 1990’s and continues on to this day.  It arose out of the need for emerging Canadian talent to find spaces and networks in order to collaborate and create new work. Because of a lack of funding and available exhibition spaces, artists sought out like-minded others, self-organized exhibition spaces and created opportunity for themselves. This led to the development of a... [more]

The theme of the Walker Art Center’s exhibition “The Quick and the Dead” got personal, quickly, when I observed that an On Kawara date painting near the entry was the same date as an uncle’s birthday. Made by Kawara to mark the passage of time, the ongoing series implies its own end in the artist’s death, just as birthdays imply to many of us that there are only so many left. This exhibition announces its’ intentions to examine The Big Questions of Life at the outset in th... [more]

Curator Daniel Birnbaum chose a clever theme in this year’s curated biennale exhibition. It has almost endless scope and he did a fairly good job of making sure that the artists fit the topic – even if that did sometimes mean equating “making installations” with “making worlds”. The art was generally of high quality, interactive, thought provoking and yes, even fun.The first and most entrancing work was Lydia Pape’s “Ttéia I, C. 2002” – a black void shot thr... [more]

at La Biennale di Venezia June 7th - November 22nd

The collateral events, like the pavilions, were a very mixed bag – it was like the biennale threw a party and everyone was invited – even those who should have been left off the guest list such as Liu Zhong (“In Praise of Nature”) and his traditional Chinese painting renditions of dull-eyed sheep – reportedly sponsored by the Chinese government. Many of the shows seemed to fall between the realms of completely irrelevant expressionist painting and poorly conceived conceptual art.T... [more]
