The Art of Creation: Development of The Floor Show Exhibit Photo by Arthur Kozlovski Most people view an art show as a complete entity, with walls perfectly aligned with paintings, floors decorated with sculptures, tables loaded with fancy champagne and cheese. These facets are all part of the final presentation of an exhibition, but the process for this production is one that takes a lot of time, patience, and creativity in its own respect. Last week, I was lucky enough to be involved wi... [more]

With her trademark sense of wondrous familiarity, she handles various traces of the East i... [more]

Not marble, nor the gilded monuments Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme; But you shall shine more bright in these contents Than unswept stone besmear'd with sluttish time. When wasteful war shall statues overturn, And broils root out the work of masonry, Nor Mars his sword nor war's quick fire shall burnThe living record of your memory. 'Gainst death and all-oblivious enmityShall you pace forth; your praise shall still find roomEven in the eyes of all posterity That wear this world... [more]

(Image: Ebbe Stub Wittrup, installation view (Burning in water, drowning in flames), 2010; © ASBAEK) Ebbe Stub Wittrup (b.1973) Since the end of the 1990s Ebbe Stub Wittrup’s artistic practice has focused on the photographic medium. In his photographs whether we look at his neorealistic snapshots or the more conceptually oriented photo series we find a mysteriousness that makes one think of a series of narrative parallel worlds. This is reflected quite specifically in his latest exhibition,... [more]

The evening of June 14th hosted the opening of F_AIR's exhibition, The Summer Issue. Entering into a white facade of single, simple pieces, a tone is set and the ambiance thrives in the curiosity of finding further value through the minimum. The artist's stories are not told, their personal theme is not bombarded into the gallery, they only have a single piece of themselves to epitomize their work, and to create a story that ties the show together. Inevitably, the showing of single pieces from ea... [more]

Life is short, and we all will die in the end. Sometimes we need reminding of these simple but powerful facts. The vanitas is a genre most associated with religious subject matter. It is included in religious images in order to tell the viewer that since life is short, they have to accept Christ before death, and also to say that there is more to life than just this fragile earthly one. Vanitas can be depicted as something as ephemeral as flowers or rotting fruit, and more often, the skull is use... [more]

Watchlist: Maria Chevska

ArtSlant Watchlist: Maria Chevska (Image: Maria Chevska, Eye of the Blackbird, 2011; © Tank Gallery, London) Maria Chevska (b. 1948, Oxford, England) Maria Chevska’s painted cobblestones refer to the materiality of the street. Retrieved from just below the surface of the road, these slightly subterranean objects have considerable gravity as paintings. The painted stripes on the surface of the stones are records of palettes used on her main body of paintings. The cobblestones therefore act as a storage... [more]

Nick Cave at Seattle Art Museum March 10th, 2011 - June 5th, 2011
Posted 4/25/11

The artist Nick Cave has a little something for everybody. Do you like pastel colors and shiny objects? He’s got something for you. How about costume, performance and show? There’s some of that too. Ritual? Craftsmanship? Consumerism? Check.  There are so many cultural references sewn, glued and drilled onto Cave’s sculptures that they explode with social baggage. At the same time they somehow are able to separate from their materials, to discard their connotations and history for a sparkling, os... [more]

(Image: Ettore Spalletti, Rosa, fior di pesco, 2009, © Museum Kurhaus Kleve, Photo: Achim Kukulies, Düsseldorf) Ettore Spalletti (b. 1940, Cappelle sul Tavo, Pescara, Italy) Perhaps no artist today conveys so poetically the precariousness underlying the apparent stability of life and culture than Ettore Spalletti. “Poetically” does not mean softness of thought or the search for elevated but ultimately empty gestures: here it is a question of an artist building a bridge between himself and the world...
