Two Museums in Venice - Gallerie dell'Accademia & Collezione Peggy Guggenheim

Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice In 2000, when I visited Rome and Florence, I made a seemingly silly day trip from Florence to Venice, specifically to visit Gallerie dell'Accademia in order to see two of my favorite paintings there - the intimate and enigmatic Tempest by Giorgione and Paolo Veronese's immense and celebratory The Feast in the House of Levi, along with others. The trip to Venice was quite rushed but the visit to the museum and admiring those paintings below were truly gratifying. ... [more]

I have been to Venice many times in my life, and I think my favorite moment is the approach. As the train pulls into Venezia Santa Lucia station I have the feeling that I have arrived. I feel as though I have arrived at the end of a pilgrimage, across the world, to another land, another era. It may have something to do with the fairytale beauty of this ancient archipelago, or it may stem from the sensation of a connection to the crusaders of the Middle Ages, a connection that is encouraged as I am... Gregg Chadwick La Notte 14"x11" oil on linen 2012 La Notte, my latest painting, was begun shortly after I returned from my latest excursion to Venice, Italy. Venice, poised between sea and land, is a place where light, shade, color, and reflection merge and recombine in the city's watery environment. In this mirrored world, past and present seem to coexist. History’s shadows slide in and out of darkened alleys and slip along narrow canals.   The color and light found in the artworks of the... My Favorite Paintings at Galleria dell'Accademia, Venezia (Venice Academy)

My second day trip from Firenze (Florence) was to Venezia (Venice). This is much more challenging than a trip to Sienna, due to the much longer distance between the cities, and the fact that Venice had much more to offer than Sienna. We departed by train in the early morning and near mid-day, we arrived at Venice.  We spent a decently short time to marvel at the canals and the took river taxi (much cheaper than gondola) to the St Marco Square and saw the amazing Romanesque cathedral.  Afterwards, w...
