The Year's Best Drone Videos (So Far)   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Posted 11/11/14

Drone photography and video, like 3D printing before it, is currently hovering above a saturation point where it’s no longer so novel that it's inherently cool. To get us excited you’re going to have to do more than release your quadcopter above a bucolic landscape and set the resulting panoramic footage to a soothing soundtrack. The medium ain't the message. We’ve already featured drone porn and drone art on ArtSlant today. In honor of what's become an impromptu Drone Day, he... [more]

The Poetics of Collaboration and Collision: An Interview with EcoArtTech
by
3/16/14 Posted 3/16/14

Rochester, NY, Feb. 2014: I met up with Leila Nadir and Cary Peppermint at Equal Grounds, a cafe in Rochester’s South Wedge neighborhood, on an unusually sunny winter day. While I opted for coffee, Nadir and Peppermint are serious tea drinkers and brought their own special blend. Longtime partners in life and art, together they form EcoArtTech, a new media collaborative dedicated to exploring the environmental imagination through blurring the boundaries of natural, built, and technological spaces. D... [more]

The Whole Truth - Lawrence Abu Hamdan   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

You avert your eyes when I ask you if you're really no longer in love with those that broke your heart. You twitch a little after you've stolen, heave and churn inside before accepting that job you don't want. It is the gap between the truth and your realisation of it that makes for dramatic irony, that makes for the narratives within which you swallow and strut through life. And if you lived sensitively, the truth – the direction of the grain upon which it's all written – reveals itself.... [more]

A sobering and potently nostalgic excursion   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Mika Taanila at Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma November 1st, 2013 - March 2nd
Posted 1/24/14

In Time Machines Mika Taanila’s fascination with scientific research and technology makes for a sobering and potently nostalgic excursion. This occurs by virtue of the fact that many of Taanila’s works involve the recycling of obsolete technology, popular music excerpts and even segments from some of his own films. For example, Stimulus Progression (2005), which celebrates Muzak, parallels the ramp that leads visitors to the exhibition’s main space. At first the rhythms and melo... [more]

Liquid Modernity
by
3/14/13 Posted 3/14/13

With the ambition of giving the island6/Liu Dao blog a bit of cerebral clout, this is the first entry of a (hopefully) weekly series on “interesting ideas which have something to do with island6’s artworks”. So this week’s theme is… ‘Liquid Modernity’ ‘Liquid Modernity’ is the brainchild of the Polish-born sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. Towards the end of the twentieth century Bauman was one of a number of scholars who had became frustrated and wary of the ambiguities and misconceptions which sur... [more]

The Whitney Goes Geek
by
6/30/11 Posted 6/30/11

The interplay of high and low culture is hardly a novel concept.  However, rarely is it posed in such an interesting way as in Cory Arcangel's exhibition on through September 11th at the Whitney Museum, investigating our relationship to technological kitsch and innovation.  Arcangel's first major museum show in the US continues the Whitney's series of summer full-floor artist projects, with the majority of the works being produced over the past nine months during its preparation. When entering... [more]

Paulo Nenflidio at Art Statements   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Objects of impossible weight, like airplanes, are able to fly through the use of motion. A “kinetic sculpture” by the Brazilian artist Paulo Nenflidio, manages to bring a whale aloft in the air, much like it occupies the water. Made entirely of brass welded with tin, through the magic of technology, an object of impossible weight again floats. According to the artist, “the caudal and pectoral fins [of the whale] resemble wings of an aircraft. The whole work resembles an aerial or underwater vessel”. “... [more]

Karen Seneferu

Ron Moultrie Saunders, karen seneferu at Krowswork January 29th, 2011 - March 11th, 2011

Karen Seneferu transformed a small room for "Passage" at Krowswork in Oakland (Jan. 29 - March 11).  Carefully-placed handmade sculptures and relics stand on the ground and are arrayed on the partially exposed wooden walls. White drawings made directly on the bare floor seem to be remnants from a ritual. Video of large round rising suns and moons projects on the largest wall. This space feels charged. Three sculptures resembling human figures (approx. 4' - 5'... [more]
