For a while, I used to prefer museum gift shops to the museums themselves. I don't know why. Maybe the continuing crush of people in the galleries turned me off from the whole contemplative excitement, as it were, of seeing great art. I mean, no one can get close enough to the Mona Lisa at the Louvre to see anything but the back of someone's head, or an upraised digital camera.
