Seeking to postpone stock experiences and squeeze them all into our few days together, I avoided visiting the Tower until my mother arrived. We didn’t eat macarons at Ladurée, we didn’t get hot chocolate at Café de Flore, we didn’t jostle for selfies with La Joconde, but we went to the Tower. The visit itself is a symbolic gesture, because the symbol literally haunts no matter where you are in the world. Those curving lines, stretching skyward like a bit of pinch... [more]

Three flat-bottomed brown paper bags, so simple, you could easily pass them by, stand dead center in the Kitchen Transformations section of the Designing Modern Women 1890-1990 exhibit at MoMA. On the adjacent label there are two names, Margaret E. Knight, the woman who patented the machine that made the bags in the 1870s-1880s, and Charles B. Stilwell, who, according to Juliet Kinchin, organizer of the exhibit and curator in the Department of Architecture and Design, made “subtle modifications&rdq... [more]

Studio Shot, Deb Lawrence,
“You don’t know how paralyzing that is, that stare of a blank canvas…but the blank canvas is afraid of the real, passionate painter who dares and who has broken the spell of `you can’t’ once and for all.”
-Vincent van Gogh, 1884

SOFA takes stamina, a keen and curious eye, and a pair of comfortable walking shoes. A long parade of blown glass, statement jewelry, and iron sculpture can get fatiguing. Else, you’d have to fetishize decorative arts to walk every row of the massive Navy Pier pavilion, densely packed with some seventy dealers’ booths. Entering its 20th year – an important milestone – the fair of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art can feel intensely variegated and unwieldy. A few pieces a... [more]
There’s always a back-to-school feeling when September comes round, no matter how long ago you closed that chapter; it brings a certain feeling of dread and sweaty-palmed anxiety, and the peculiar impulse that you should buy a pencil case. Most gallerists no doubt have the same feeling; after a long summer closure, poor souls are forced back to dust down the artworks and open up their doors.
Autumn in London in terms of shows can by now be loosely divided into two categories, opening BF (... [more]
Knock on wood and you stave away bad luck. The saying entails a performative act: interact with an everyday object and you, the subject, are protected. The exhibition frm vs fnctn nd bck gn at neugerriemschneider gallery presents reflections on one's relation to the material world. Its point of departure is "the creative confrontation with everyday objects” and it features artists Ai Weiwei, Pawel Althamer, Olafur Eliasson, Isa Genzken, Sharon Lockhart, Renata Lucas, Jorge Pardo, Simon Starli... Commercials set to an uplifting loop of an indie song – the violins, the slow crescendo of choir voices, a gratifying and persistent drumbeat – this sound is reified, a ubiquitous, and entirely digestible image of faux-celebration used to market a feeling of happiness. This over-heartened and insufferably “inspirational” attitude strikes an irritating nerve in some, but the trope of the live-for-today individual is often hard to criticize, or even notice, in its calculated... Two and a half years ago, the Danish artist collective N55 developed a new bicycle design in collaboration with artist and designer Till Wolfer. The designs can be downloaded from an open source, the materials bought from pretty much any DIY shop in the world, and the bikes can be made with simple hand held tools. The aim is to reclaim production. Until the 9th of September the bikes are being exhibited at the Glazen Huis (Glass House) in Amsterdam’s Amstelpark, as part of the exhibition project Zon... [more]
